Examples of the Law of Entropy
Science strives to describe the universe with laws and equations that help us to make sense of how things work. One of these laws is entropy, which states that without outside influence, a given system or object always tends to move in a direction of less organization, less order, more chaos, and less available or usable energy.
Examples of entropy:
- A block of ice on a hot stove. The ice melts and evaporates, a condition far less organized than the original block.
- The universe expanding. All stars and galaxies are moving rapidly outward from a central point. Stars burn out and implode, often creating a black hole. Eventually all the matter is disorganized, and no energy is available.
- Aging. With time the telomeres of our chromosomes degrade, our DNA becomes incapable of exact replication, and our body functions slowly and inexorably decline until death finally intervenes.
- Marbles in a box. Stack a pyramid of marbles in the corner of a box. Then shake the box, and you will ALWAYS observe that the marbles are less organized than they were before the shaking.
- Erosion. Over time, all mountains eventually erode and fall to the valleys below as a result of rain, gravity, ice, wind, and more.
But why are we discussing a law of physics, or in this case the Second Law of Thermodynamics? Because there is a law of emotional and spiritual entropy too.
The Law of Emotional and Spiritual Entropy
If children are neglected—simply left to make their own observations and decisions about themselves and the world—they will naturally move toward a condition of less organization, less order, more chaos, less available energy, less love, and greatly diminished ability to choose happiness.
No abuse is required, simply the absence of any organizing influence to counteract entropy.
So are children doomed? Not at all, because love and knowledge are inexpressibly powerful influences that stop and even reverse entropy.
If children are sufficiently and consistently loved and taught, they will increase in order and understanding. They will then radiate love themselves and will become happy, an ordered and exalted condition that stands in stark contrast to the emotional pain and nothingness that is the end result of entropy.
YOU are the building power in your child’s life—the anti-entropy. You have the ability to dispel the insidious, steady destruction of entropy on their potential happiness.
You can find love for yourself, share it with them, and teach them to be loving and responsible. You are the miracle they need, and you can do it.
